Creating Research Board

When researching Da Vinci's invention many diiferent ideas for modelling and animation come to mind. At the moment I am liking the idea of modelling the ornithopter or helicopter as I think they will make a great looking model and movement would be effective as well as accurate as it was noted how it would function unlike other inventions such as the tank where Da Vinci did not specify how it worked.

I am enjoying learning about Leonardo's life, inspirations and creations.

Leonardo DaVinci Initial research

The assignment requires that one of Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions is to be modelled. There are many that he designed and probably many that people do not know about.

His inventions were only part of his skills. He was also a reknowned artist and sculpter.

Leonardo's inventions had different purposes to the previous one. He had many different implentations for his machines such as industrial work, warfare, transport and flying concepts.

Each one has its interesting factors from which I must choose which I would like to model and animate.

From here I will create a research board to look deeper into each invention that I can find.

Fruit modelling 2

For a second fruit model I chose a banana.

This turned out quite difficult due to the different tools I had not quite got the hang of yet. So with some help from Richard I managed to create this banana.

There is a problem with the top of the banana where it has been 'bevelled' too far and has gone in to itself. I would of liked to correct it but I liked the way to looked ( I thought it represented a banana skin quite well)

Fruit model

For my first organic 3d model I made an apple.

I converted a sphere into a editable polygon and by pressing F4 I could see the wire frame around it. From here I used the soft selection tool and edited the apple to make it more life-like.

To add a stalk I made a cylinder and used the 'Bend' modifier at a 45 degree angle.

I am really pleased with the outcome of my apple although I wouldn't eat it as it looks a little too bashed up!

Primitive building 2

For a second attempt I tried modelling a different shaped building, the Taj Mahal.
Its spherical shape was more challenging than the Empire State building but did not prove too hard. I used the clone tool instead of having to draw each individual shape.

But I forgot to make the colours look anything like the real thing!!

Primitive building model

To identify with 3ds Max we were given the task of recreating a famous building using the basic tools from the first tutorial.

I chose the Empire State Building as I thought this was geometrically simpler than other buildings but would test the use of the align tool and move tool.

I am pleased with the way my first attempt of 3ds Max has turned out but I hope to improve on my skills.

The Assignment

I have just seen the assignment we are going to be set. I am very excited to be able to use different software to recreate Leonardo DaVinci's famous inventions.

I am excited but slightly anxious about using the new software (3D Max) but I also and looking forward to the technical side of it as 3D modelling is the area in which I would like to go to into after the course is finished.

I am looking forward to cracking on with it! (as long as its not too hard!)
